About this position

Carroll Preparatory School is seeking a highly capable and creative Native English-speaking teacher to teach children at the primary level, particularly emerging readers and writers in Grade 1. Our classrooms are small, active, mixed-age, and inclusive. Children do not spend the whole day sitting at desks or completing worksheets. They learn through meaningful discussion, storytelling, projects, movement, play, and hands-on exploration.

This position is best suited to a teacher who is comfortable responding to children’s ideas, adapting instruction to different learning needs, and actively participating in the classroom—not someone whose experience is limited to delivering whole-class lessons in large, traditional classrooms.

Responsibilities

  • Teach English reading, phonics, writing, speaking, and literature at the primary level.
  • Help emerging readers and writers develop strong foundational skills and the confidence to try, make mistakes, and improve.
  • Design active, hands-on lessons using storytelling, games, projects, discussion, and meaningful writing.
  • Guide children in writing stories, fiction, personal narratives, and other creative texts.
  • Model excellent spoken and written English, including grammar, vocabulary, story structure, and literary techniques.
  • Differentiate instruction for children working at different levels within a mixed-age classroom.
  • Support neurodiverse learners and children with different learning, language, and developmental needs.
  • Observe and document student progress and use evidence to plan appropriate next steps.
  • Collaborate closely with co-teachers and other members of the academic team.

Essential Qualifications

  • Native English speaker with excellent spoken and written English.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, Literature, Linguistics, or a related field.
  • At least two years of relevant experience teaching primary-aged children.
  • Strong creative-writing ability. Candidates should be confident writing and teaching stories, short fiction, narratives, and children’s literature.
  • Experience using active, inquiry-based, project-based, or play-based teaching methods.
  • Able to manage small groups and mixed-age or mixed-ability classrooms.
  • Patient, responsive, and genuinely comfortable working in an inclusive classroom.
  • Experience with Reggio Emilia-inspired education or emergent curriculum.
  • Knowledge of structured literacy, systematic phonics, and early reading development.

Please Do Not Apply If

  • Your teaching experience is limited to lecture-based instruction in large, traditional classrooms.
  • You are uncomfortable with active, flexible, or mixed-age learning environments.
  • You cannot confidently teach phonics, early reading, and creative writing.
  • You prefer to rely mainly on worksheets, textbooks, or pre-written lesson scripts.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on qualifications and relevant experience.
  • Opportunities for professional development.
  • Support with the visa and work permit process for eligible candidates.
