About this position

About Us

Founded in 2009, the Abaarso Network enables transformative change in Somaliland, East Africa, through educating and empowering the human capital needed to achieve ethical and effective development. The Network includes three world-class educational institutions that provide high-potential students with critical access, support, and leadership development: a residential high school (Abaarso School), Barwaaqo Women’s University, and Kaabe Montessori primary schools.

The Republic of Somaliland declared its independence from Somalia in 1991 and maintains a stable government and border. After decades of war, generations of Somali girls have grown up with little to no education or chance of economic opportunity. To help themselves, their families, and their country’s developing economy, these Somali girls must have quality educational opportunities.

Abaarso School (http://abaarsoschool.org/)
Abaarso School students became the first in their country in over 30 years to matriculate to US universities, including Harvard, Yale, MIT, Brown, Columbia, Cornell and UPenn. The school has been featured on 60 Minutes and in the New York Times, BBC, CNN, and more. Abaarso is an American-accredited school that has received funding support from USAID.

Barwaaqo University (https://barwaaqouniversity.org/)
Barwaaqo University is creating life-long careers for women in Somaliland. In a country where female unemployment is well over 80%, our students are highly successful at finding stable, high-paying jobs within 3 months of graduation. Barwaaqo offers degrees in education and communications, filling a crucial gender gap - fewer than 10% of teachers in Somaliland are female.

Qualifications

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education (Master’s degree is an advantage).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Results-oriented, ambitious, entrepreneurial; takes initiative and thrives in ambiguous situations.
  • Able to live well within a culturally diverse community.

If you are an exceptional candidate who would like to make an impact, we welcome your application.
