Purpose of the Role: The EAL Teacher supports multilingual learners in a bilingual, inquiry-driven learning environment. Working within the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP), the EAL Teacher designs and delivers targeted English language instruction that enables students to access the curriculum, develop academic language, and become confident, curious communicators. Instruction is informed by MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) data and ongoing formative assessment to ensure individualized learning pathways for every child.
Key Responsibilities:
Teaching & Learning
- Plan and deliver high-quality EAL instruction aligned with the IB PYP philosophy.
- Use MAP assessment data and classroom observations to design individualized language learning plans for each EAL student.
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse language proficiency levels and learning needs.
- Create a literacy-rich learning environment that promotes vocabulary development, reading fluency, writing skills, and academic language across subjects.
- Embed inquiry-based learning approaches that encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and student agency.
Collaboration & Curriculum
- Collaborate closely with classroom teachers to integrate EAL strategies into Units of Inquiry.
- Support transdisciplinary learning by aligning EAL instruction with classroom inquiries and learning goals.
- Contribute to curriculum planning and review, ensuring inclusive practices for multilingual learners.
- Participate in professional learning communities and IB training related to language development and inquiry-based education.
Assessment & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of language development and progress toward individualized goals.
- Prepare clear, meaningful reports for parents that explain language progress, strengths, and next steps.
- Communicate regularly with parents, providing guidance on how to support English language development at home.

Accountability Overview:
- Deputy Principal (Primary) & PYP Coordinator: Responsible for the quality, consistency, and integrity of PYP implementation across the Primary School.
- Improved student learning and wellbeing outcomes through effective leadership of teaching, learning, and pastoral systems.
- Professional growth and instructional effectiveness of Primary teaching staff.
- Contribution to strategic planning, operational effectiveness, and school-wide improvement initiatives.
- Compliance with PYP standards, school policies, and regulatory requirements.
Key Performance Indicators (KPI):
- Student Language Progress: Demonstrable progress in English language acquisition as evidenced by MAP data, formative assessments, and individual language plans.
- Curriculum Access & Inclusion: Effective implementation of EAL strategies enabling EAL students to meaningfully engage with Units of Inquiry and classroom learning.
- Quality of Planning & Differentiation: Consistent use of data to plan differentiated instruction that meets a range of language proficiency levels.
- Collaboration & Co-Planning: Regular, effective collaboration with classroom teachers to embed EAL support within transdisciplinary learning.
- Communication & Reporting: Clear, timely reporting to parents on language progress, strengths, and next steps, with positive feedback on clarity and usefulness.
Qualifications & Attributes:
- Teaching Licence or QTS.
- Recognised teaching qualification with experience or specialism in EAL / ESL / ELL.
- Strong understanding of second language acquisition and effective EAL pedagogical practices.
- Experience working with assessment data (e.g. MAP) to inform instruction and track progress.
- Familiarity with the IB PYP and inquiry-based learning approaches is preferred.
- Strong collaboration, communication, and relationship-building skills with staff, students, and parents.
- Commitment to inclusive education, professional growth, and safeguarding responsibilities.
