Job Summary

Anglo Singapore International School is seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of Secondary English & Social Studies to lead the English department and oversee the delivery of Lower Secondary Social Studies at our Bangkok campus. This role is ideal for an educator who is academically strong in English, well-versed in the Cambridge IGCSE English curriculum, and confident in supporting students from diverse language backgrounds, including those with English as an Additional Language (EAL). The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening curriculum coherence, teaching quality, and student outcomes across the secondary years.

Job Overview

The Head of Secondary English & Social Studies is responsible for leading the English department across Secondary levels and overseeing the Lower Secondary Social Studies programme. The role reports to the Secondary Principal and works closely with senior leadership to ensure alignment with the school’s academic direction, curriculum expectations, and whole-school priorities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Leading high-quality teaching and learning in Secondary English, including curriculum planning, assessment, moderation, and standards.
  • Demonstrating strong expertise in the Cambridge IGCSE English curriculum, including First Language English (FLE) and English as a Second Language (ESL).
  • Ensuring coherence and progression across English pathways, including supporting students transitioning between ESL, FLE, and mainstream English.
  • Supporting teachers in implementing effective strategies for students with English as an Additional Language (EAL), ensuring access to the curriculum while maintaining high academic expectations.
  • Overseeing the Lower Secondary Social Studies programme (History and Geography), ensuring coherent humanities exposure that strengthens literacy, analytical thinking, and global awareness.
  • Working collaboratively with the curriculum leadership team to review, refine, and implement the curriculum in line with Cambridge requirements and school expectations.
  • Contributing to CIS accreditation processes, ensuring subject-level practice and documentation align with accreditation standards and continuous school improvement.
  • Upholding and promoting safeguarding practices, ensuring policies are followed consistently and that student wellbeing remains central to all teaching and learning.
  • Mentoring and supporting teachers through coaching, lesson observation, and professional dialogue.
  • Monitoring student progress and using data to inform teaching, intervention, and curriculum refinement.
  • Engaging constructively with parents regarding curriculum, assessment, and student progress when required.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, Education, or a related field (essential); Master’s degree preferred.
  • Recognised teaching qualification such as QTS, PGCE, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience teaching Secondary English, preferably within an international or Cambridge-aligned school.
  • Strong working knowledge of Cambridge IGCSE English First Language and English as a Second Language.
  • Experience teaching and supporting students with EAL in a secondary school context.
  • Leadership experience as a Head of Department or similar role is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of curriculum development and familiarity with international accreditation expectations (CIS experience is an advantage).
  • A clear commitment to safeguarding and student wellbeing.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organisational skills.
