The Sarnath International Nyingma Institute (SINI) is a Buddhist institute located in Sarnath, India. SINI’s mission is to sustain the roots of the Dharma, advance the study of classical Buddhist languages, empower the transmission of the Dharma, and promote interdisciplinary and cross-cultural collaboration. The English for Dharma Purposes (EDP) Program is a 3-year residential program designed for monastics with advanced degrees in Buddhist philosophy to further the study of the English language through the lens of the Dharma. We are recruiting a teacher to begin in mid-September at our campus in Sarnath, just north of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.

This is a long-term, full-time volunteer position for someone who is willing to live and teach in person at the institute in Sarnath. Classes run year-round. Our program is residential, so teachers live, work, study, and have meals together with students, colleagues, and visitors on campus. This is a great opportunity to serve the Sangha and help support the English language learning of future monastic leaders.

Teacher Responsibilities

  • Teaching classes 20-25 hours per week
  • Teaching SINI’s English for Dharma Purposes textbook and curriculum, in addition to conversation, listening, and reading and writing
  • Assigning and grading projects, presentations, and quizzes
  • Attending teacher meetings
  • Performing administrative tasks such as keeping attendance records and recording grades
  • Participating in additional events on campus such as workshops, seminars, and ceremonies

Desired Qualifications

  • TESOL teaching qualification (TEFL/CELTA or equivalent)
  • Classroom teaching experience
  • International experience, especially in India or Nepal

Optional Qualifications

  • Experience teaching adults and/or refugees
  • Experience with English for Specific Purposes or English for Academic Purposes
  • Familiarity with Buddhism, the Dharma, or monastics
  • Tibetan language skills
