Located in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China, Hangzhou City University (HZCU) is seeking multiple applicants for Academic English Lecturer positions within the English Foundation Program (EFP) of the joint institute with New Zealand’s University of Waikato (NZUWI). The NZUWI is a modern learning facility equipped with Wi-Fi; touch-screen and peer-to-peer capable smart-boards; various-sized lecture halls, labs and classrooms; and movable classroom furniture. The EFP uses current textbooks and online learning offerings from international publishers.
Academic English Teaching Post
Teach Academic English to college freshmen. PRC employment visas for these positions are available only to teachers with passports from countries that the PRC government recognizes as having English as their first language. Note: The PRC does not currently recognize India, Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, and The Philippines on their list.
Qualifications
- Required: MA/MS (preferably in Applied Linguistics, ESL, or TESOL)
- Minimum two (2) years of tertiary-level (college or university) Academic English teaching experience
- Familiarity with Blackboard or other LMS
- High MS Word proficiency; moderate PowerPoint and Excel proficiency
- Preferred: familiarity with APA research/writing style; moderate LLM, LRM proficiency for instruction and materials development
Application and Start Dates
- Applications for several Fall 2026 vacancies accepted until vacancies are filled
- Start date: early September 2026
Work Details
- Teach a 16-week instructional semester and administer & score final exams during weeks 17–18
- Maximum of 18 teaching hours per week (45-minute hours)
- Adhere to assigned course outlines, syllabi, student assignments, assessments, and record-keeping (including attendance)
- Participate in materials development, assessment development and rubrics
- Mark assessments according to rubrics and provide written and verbal feedback to students
- Participate in professional development meetings and classroom observations
Contract
- Initially one-year, renewable
- Full-time; second contract negotiable
Salary
- For lecturers renewing for at least one academic year: 12 months paid at a minimum of RMB 20,000/month (pre-tax)
- For lecturers not renewing for at least one academic year: 11 months paid at a minimum of RMB 20,000/month (pre-tax)

- Authentication of degree diploma by a PRC embassy or consulate

- Original employment references stating teaching positions and dates for a minimum of two (2) years of tertiary-level English-teaching experience
- Passing of PRC standardized physical exam indicating "good health" (within past 6 months)
